Marathon 1000 XHB coating

Marathon 1000 XHB is a solid barrier coating especially suited for the Arctic offshore environment where ice resistance and long-lasting corrosion protection are of vital importance. Marathon 1000 XHB is a solvent free, high build, highly abrasion- and impact resistant two component epoxy coating reinforced with glass flakes.

Marathon 1000 XHB is well suited for use on structural steel and piping that is exposed to corrosive offshore environments. It is specially suited in areas where high mechanical strength is required, such as splash or tidal zones. It can also be used as a non-slip deck system in combination with appropriate Anti-Skid aggregate and finish coat.

In arctic conditions, offshore structures are exposed to physical damage caused by waves and sea ice. In addition, repair and maintenance in the Arctic is either unachievable at all (parts that are underwater and in the splash zone) or limited to a very narrow warm weather window. Therefore, it is critical to select a coating that will ensure protection of steel and concrete from corrosion and abrasion throughout the full design life of a facility.

Jotun Arctic Test Station

In 2016 Jotun opened an arctic test station at Svalbard to better understand how the unique arctic climate affects corrosion rates and how our coatings are performing in these surroundings.

There is a common understanding that it is vital to protect the extremely fragile arctic environment. The Svalbard Test Station was developed in order to test paints and coatings for service in cold climate while minimizing the environmental impact. Jotun Arctic Test Station offers unique state-of-the-art testing facilities including coating application facilities. We monitor and analyze the latest climate parameters as well as climate change. Together with oil and gas companies we develop new test methods to measure the arctic impact on corrosion and passive fire protection methods in the region.
